Training and Consultation Services

Bruce Olson, Executive Director of the American Grand Jury Foundation, provides on-site grand jury training in two- and three-day formats. A one-day workshop is also offered for civil grand jurors who wish to improve their procedure manuals. Special one-day workshops for a variety of subjects are also available, including

  • the design and administration of questionnaires as tools for organizational reconnaissance
  • writing effective civil grand jury investigative reports
  • the essentials of program evaluation in local government
  • an overview of California local governments and pertinent sources of information
  • highlights of the California criminal justice system
  • interviewing techniques for civil grand jurors

The cost for these training opportunities depends on the length of the workshop, travel expenses, and the number of people attending. Grand juries in several counties may wish to host any of these workshops jointly if topics are of mutual interest. A substantial discount for volume purchases of California Grand Juries: A Study in Citizenship is offered to workshop participants.

Mariposa County grand juror

Modoc County grand juror

"Thank you for the training. The structure and content was helpful and informative."

Alpine County grand juror

"Nine years ago I attended your seminar for grand jurors in Santa Rosa. If I had not taken your seminar, I would have been completely destroyed by the conclusions [in a civil grand jury report], but having taken your course, I knew how to fight back and win."

Elected school-board official, Del Norte County

"On behalf of the 2002–2003 Santa Clara County Grand Jury, I would like to thank you for providing two outstanding days of training. Your research, scholarship, and knowledge of grand jury matters are most impressive, and you were able to convey a great deal of valuable information in your two days with us."

Foreman, Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury

"Two jurors attended the American Grand Jury Foundation training seminar at Santa Clara University and brought new ideas and methods back to this Grand Jury. The valuable information provided by these two jurors prompts this Grand Jury to recommend that four jurors be sent each year for this training."

Foreman’s Statement, Amador County Grand Jury Final Report

"Bruce Olson has been my instructor and colleague for more than 45 years. He wrote the book on California grand juries and is one of the most knowledgeable experts on grand jury procedure and report writing. I highly recommend his grand jury training seminars and related materials to newly impaneled grand jurors."
